DIACONATE MEETING MINUTES FOR JUNE 2, 2010

Present: Linda Baker, Bob Macallister, Dave Ehart, Syd Bare, Carl Meade, Barbara King, Cindy Nickerson, Bill Carr, Marilyn Lariviere, Rev Terry, Kathy Sullivan, Liaison- Bruce Sandberg

Opening Prayer: Linda Baker, “beautiful”.

Minister’s Report: The “special services” for the summer will take place on each Wednesday evening for six weeks starting on July 7^th going through August 11^th. One deacon will be needed for each Wednesday evening. Details will follow and to be sent to Kathy S. via Bob M.  

Minutes of last Meeting: Not everybody obtained the minutes either from Kathy or church website. Each person on the committee will take responsibility to obtain his or her copy of the minutes. Please read them before the next meeting. Minutes were accepted.

Old Business: Tiny Tots- All trying to understand this situation better. Suggested that two people are needed to cover liability. Bob M to talk to Rev Terry re: putting request for more volunteers in the newsletter and/or bulletins.

Ushers and Greeters: Suggestion to have “Recognition Sunday” at a church service in the New Year when the committees start anew with the new members. Maybe have all new members for each committee stand up for personal recognition. Dress code for deacons was discussed. Can be casual dress, example shirt and tie for men, but no jeans or T-shirts for any deacon. Decision made to ask for at least twelve people to be on the Diaconate Committee from now on. More will be better. Diaconate members should give the Nominating Committee some names for possible new members for the Diaconate Committee. When you are a DOD you may get the key from Elise during the week to get into church on Sunday. If the choir is singing, then the church is sure to be open.

By-Laws: We are doing what the by-laws say we should be doing. There will be recommendation for a change to the section of the by-laws that says “no member of the Diaconate Committee or Search Committee can be on the Pastor/Parish Committee”.  

Goals: Cindy summarized her “prayer idea” from last month. God is the power behind what we do. Importance of praying for growth of our church.  Suggestions: All committees start their meetings with 10 minutes of prayer, have a three hour prayer session in which every 15 minutes would be covered by an individual in church. Over the summer each person on the Diaconate Committee will pray in a personal manner to God for growth of our church. What does He want us to do? We will discuss again in September.

New Business:

Pentecostal Sunday- Rave reviews! Brought people together from different cultures. Enjoyed the choir when they were facing towards the congregation. Some technical issues with words on the screen. Marilyn L. spoke about having activity folders for the kids in the summer for church time. They will be put in the office so that deacons can give them out on Sundays.
