DIACONATE COMMITTEE MEETING MINUTES FOR MAY 5, 2010

PRESENT: Bob Macallister, Cindy Nickerson, Joan Augustino, Syd Bare, Linda Baker, Barbara King, Carl Meade, Kathy Sullivan, Rev. Terry, Bruce Sandberg-Liaison

Minister’s Report: Rev Terry suggested having jazz services this summer, one x a week for six weeks. It would be considered a “service with a twist”. He knows the contact person who would come and help us set up for it. Members who were present voted yes to this idea. Rev Terry will pursue this.

Liaison’s  Report: Bruce asked that the by-laws regarding the Diaconate Committee be looked at.  Bob M. will do this prior to next meeting. Discussion will ensue if needed. Results will be given to Bruce after the meeting.  “Do we actually do what the by-laws say?, or we will make changes in the by-laws to say what we really do. “

Minutes: Nobody really had read  April’s minutes. There was a question of how to get them off the church’s web site. Kathy read what she thought was the correct way. Bob M summarized the minutes and we went through them and discussed if needed.

Old Business: Emergency Names List- some people may not want their names to be on this list. Kathy S. will write out a reminder for Elise to put in newsletter regarding “keeping the usher/greeter sign-up sheet alive”. Is  Mary Jane Garneau available every Sunday for Tiny tots? Whose responsibility is it to set this up or find out about it? This is for DODs to be aware so if families come in looking for this, we can have available answers for them.  Bob M will talk to Rev Terry about this. Some talk about having ID bracelets for children and parents at some point in the future.

New Business: DODs should not do anything that feels uncomfortable. Example: If you need help in ringing the bell, please ask for help. Check oil in the candles every week. Friendship books have been restocked thanks to Carl. Linda B shares that Youth Street Reach is going well. There will be “beach time” in July. Much enthusiasm for upcoming Vacation Bible School. Confirmation is on the agenda also.

Goals for the Diaconate/and church: Cindy’s idea is to ask God via prayer to build up our church in the way he sees fit. More emphasis on the Lord’s Will as well as having committees and personal ideas to grow our church. Linda B. suggested a day of prayer at the church. This will be discussed again. Barbara K. would like to possibly have a mini-ceremony or some acknowledgement of new deacons coming onto the Diaconate Committee. We will speak of this again after some thought. Barbara will be in touch with Rev Terry and Linda also on this matter. Maybe Rev Terry could introduce new deacons at the church service.

DODs will continue to accommodate the choir and have doors closed before church service until they are done practicing. People can sit in the back of the church during choir practice if  they want to do so.

Usher’s and greeter’s names will continue to be put in the bulletins on Sunday.

May 23rd Pentecost Sunday- Diaconate Committee does not have to supply coffee or  any refreshments. Just attend if you like and help out if you want to. International food offering would be nice.
