Diaconate Meeting Minutes                                                                           April 1, 2009

Attendance: Bob MacAllister, Bill Carr, Cindy Nickerson, Syd Bare, Jan Llewelyn, Gail Munro, Carl Meade, Kathy Sullivan, Linda Baker, Sara Baker, Rev. Terry, Bruce Sandberg

Jan opened meeting, and thanked everyone for their hard work in her absence.

Barbara King is still recovering and hopes to return soon.

Rev. Terry reminded Deacons that guest preachers for two weeks following Easter will be Rev. Philip Mitchell, and Rev. Carl Schultz.

Rev. Terry reviewed operation of the new handicap accessible front door; the right side of the double doors needs to be unlocked and greeters should be encouraged to assist people with walkers as they enter.

We discussed other responsibilities that need to be followed too:  check pew pencils, Ritual of Friendship pads, and envelopes, and check balcony for these too.  Also, the alter candle oil reservoirs need checking, at least monthly.

Minutes: approved as presented.

Treasurer Report: Carl reported committee’s cash balance is 56.61.  Our supplies are still sufficient for several months.

Old Business:  Jan spoke on pagers regards nursery security.  Any quantity may be purchased.   Expected cost is approx. $100 each.  Reusable ID wrists are being looked into to identify children and their parents.  A temporary alternative to the pagers could be use of the short range radios the sexton uses.

In discussion about tiny-tot coverage Bruce reminded us that two CORI checked people should be present in each classroom or tiny-tots room with children present.

Jan reported that 6 of 8 people asked to be volunteers in case of a medical emergency responded positively.  Syd, Bill, and Jan will be on sub-committee to organize an emergency medical response team.

As a group the volunteers have suggested we have specific additional items at hand that are not present in the first aid boxes placed around the facility.  Jan investigated concerns regards an EMR team and found they wouldn’t face liability as volunteers.  A Massachusetts Good Samaritan law protects volunteers that use reasonable and prudent judgment to give emergency assistance.

Rev. Terry and Bruce returned to the Church Committee meeting at this point.

New Business: We discussed various topics; Holy Week schedule, weekly communication with Christian Education director, name tags, ringing the bell.

Jan asked new members for feedback.  They have done terrific job, and learned quickly.
